EDGEWATER, MD 21037 Located south of Annapolis, Edgewater encompasses several large communities. Bordered by the South River to the north, the Rhode River to the south, the Chesapeake Bay to the east, and Davidsonville to the west, Edgewater is populated by approximately 9,800 residents. It’s commercial core is situated in the triangle formed by MD 2, MD 214, and MD 253. The residential community associated with Edgewater is concentrated on the nearby peninsulas extending into the South River. Edgewater is often considered a suburb of Annapolis due to its close proximity and development in the area. The area is steadily increasing with retail and residential development. Londontown, Southdown, South River Colony, Glebe Heights, Gingerville, Woodland Beach and Glebe Heights are some of the neighborhoods found in Edgewater. Woodland Beach, which is the site of London Town, used to be the seat of Anne Arundel County from 1684 to 1695. Designated by the “Town Act of 1683” it became an important trade and tobacco shipping center and was considered as a potential site of the colonial capital of Maryland. Today, Anne Arundel County owns 25 acres of London Town which is operated as part of the county park system in partnership with the London Town Foundation. The 23 acre museum and park features history, archaeology, and horticulture. Explore the Historic area which includes the 1760 William Brown House, reconstructed colonial buildings, and an ongoing archaeological investigation in search of the “lost town” of London. Wander the eight acre garden of native plants and exotic species arranged along a mile long trail overlooking the South River. The modern Visitor Center and Pavilion support weddings, business meetings, family events as well as school and group tours. Several plantations stretched along the Edgewater and Mayo peninsula. Early occupants included the families Brewer, Beard, Lee, Burgess, Collinson, Linthicum, Mayo and Selby, making their living as farmers and watermen. Several communities retain the names of these families to date. Mayo, a dispersed residential community of nearly 6,000 people is located southeast of Edgewater where the peninsula begins to narrow. The center of Mayo is marked by the post office and Elementary School on Central Avenue (MD 214). South River Colony, a newly built community, includes townhomes and single family homes, as well as a community shopping center with a grocery store, discount department store, restaurants, and various convenience shops. Also included is a government complex, including the Edgewater Library, Senior Center, and Post Office.
